Today we went to Dean’s Beans and learns about their coffee process. We had a lot of fun learning about the ways the company works. One thing we learned was that Dean’s Beans is a fair-trade organization. Fair trade means that they trade with other countries who supply their beans and the traders get something out of it. Some of the trade goes to the farmers so they can earn more for their hard work and so they don’t feel like they don’t get anything out of it. They don’t say no to anyone, so if a little old lady wanted 3 pounds of coffee they would make it happen. Almost every industry just goes for profit. They want everything a little cheaper but also a bigger, better production.
How they go about actually producing their coffee is awesome. The green beans that they get from the different countries go in a roaster. They are roasted in small batches for better coffee. The roaster the use is the most energy efficient roaster. Than the beans go in big buckets. Dean’s Beans get orders from co-ops and local grocery stores. Then they send the orders to the workers. The workers fill the individual bags with the coffee, pack the bags and mail them off to the buyers.
